The National Museum of History of Ukraine (NMIU) is the leading historical museum of Ukraine. Founded in 1899 in Kiev, since 1944 it is housed in a building on Starokievska Hill. The Museum of History of Ukraine contains ethnographic, archeological, numismatic collections, old printed works, works of painting and sculpture and other historical exhibits. The building of the museum, which is a monument of architecture, was built in 1937-1939 by the architect Josip Karakis and was originally intended for an art school.

The museum's holdings have more than 800,000 unique monuments of history and culture from ancient times to the present. The museum has valuable archeological, numismatic collections, collections of cold and firearms, ethnography, glassware, porcelain. About 10,000 items are stored in a collection of paintings, graphics and sculptures. There is also a collection of documents from the 15th to the 21st centuries, Cossack Kleinodes, universals, certificates, letters of Hetman and Cossack officers.
