The UK’s Top Priority Education in the UK is internationally recognized for its quality and variety. The UK's top priority is to pursue the highest possible standards and to ensure access to good education for every child, young person and citizen.
The educational system in the UK is divided into four main parts: primary education, secondary education, further education and higher education.
Types of Schools There are two types of schools in the UK. They are state schools and private or public schools.
State schools More than 90% of students in the UK attend state schools. All state schools in Britain are free.
Public Schools The other 7% attend private or public schools. They are boarding schools where children live as study. Public schools are very expensive. A public school is an independent secondary school.. The entrance exams are known as Common Entrance exams.The most famous public schools are Eton, Harrow and Winchester.
Primary School Children start primary school at the age of 5. In fact primary school consists of infant and junior school. In junior school pupils spend 5 years. Primary schools usually include both girls and boys as pupils.
Secondary School At the age of 11 children enter the secondary school. They study English, Maths, Science, Design and technology, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), History, Geography, Art, Music, Physical education and foreign languages.
The National Exam At secondary school pupils study for 5 years. At the age of 16 students take their GCSE.
After taking GCSEs, students may leave secondary schooling; alternatively, they can continue their education at vocational or technical colleges.
They may take a higher level of secondary school examinations known as AS-Levels after an additional year of study.
Advanced Level Examinations Following two years of study, students may take A-Level (short for Advanced Level) examinations, which are required for university entrance in the UK. University of London.
