Appearance Describing People 1. Warm up. Good morning, boys and girls! Sit down, please! I’m glad to see you again. Get ready for the lesson. Today we are going to talk about people’s appearance and parts of the body.

As usual we begin our lesson with practice your phonetic. Look at the screen. Listen and divide the words into following columns according to their intonation pattern. Chin, oval, stepson, eye, mustache, handsome, tall, straight, before, invent, portrait, head, nickname, predict, mouth, body. First of all choose and read monosyllabic words. Now find and read the words with two syllables, in which the first syllable is stressed. Now find and read the words with two syllables, in which the second syllable is stressed.  

Match these words with their meanings: 1. It is used for breathing and smelling. eyes 2. This grows under a man’s nose. lips 3. It grows on a person’s head. a beard 4. People wear these to help them see better. an ear 5. This grows on a man’s chin. a mustache 6. The organ of hearing. a nose 7. A pair of organs of sight. hair 8. Age He is old. He is middle aged, about forty. He is young. Vocabulary Work 2 Now let’s speak about appearance. To describe persons’ appearance correctly, first we go to the general characteristics: age, height, build. Age Is this man old or young? How old is this man? And what can we say about this boy age?

Height He is tall. He is short. He is normal height. Height - Is this man tall or short? - And what about this man? - What can we say about this man height?

Build She is slim. She is fat. Build Is this girl slim or fat? Is this girl slim or fat?

Hair black hair blonde/ fair hair brown hair grey hair red hair Next we move to details such as hair and any other prominent features, like eyes, a nose, a mouth, a moustache, a beard and spectacles. Hair What colour is the hair?

Type of hair She has got long straight black hair. or Her hair is long straight and black. She has got short straight black hair. or Her hair is short straight and black Type of hair. As you know hair can be straight or curly and short, long or medium length. Have a look at the first picture. We can say: She has got long straight black hair. or Her hair is long straight and black hair.

He has no hair. = He is bold. She has got medium length, curly and blonde hair. or Her hair is medium length, curly and blonde.

Face Her face is oval. or She has got an oval face. He face is round. or She has got a round face. Face Is her face oval or round? Is her face oval or round?

Eyes grey eyes blue eyes green eyes dark eyes Note ! This is a black eye. Eyes What colour are the eyes? Note! This is a black eye!

T. - I think, she is fat. P. - No, not at all, she is slim. Vocabulary Work 3 Now I’m going to describe Snow White, but my spectacles are very bad and I can’t see her clearly. If I’m mistaken, correct my mistakes. - I think she is fat. - No, not at all she is slim. 1. – Her hair is blonde . 2. - Her hair is long. 3. – Her eyes are green. 4. – Her nose is long. 5. – She is old. 6. – Her face is oval. 7. – She is short. 8. – Her mouth is big. 9. – She is awful. 10. – She is stupid.

He hasn’t got … He has got … Listening. - I’m going to describe Shrek, but I still can’t see very well. - Look at the pictures and listen to the descriptions. Correct my mistake if there is one. For example: Linda is not old. She is young Shrek Shrek is big and fat. His body is green. He is bold. His ears are long and funny. He’s got big dark eyes. He’s got a small nose and a big mouth. He‘s got bad manners, but he has got a lot of friends.

a girl (Lara) - There is more than one mistake in this text.   Lara is old. She is tall and slim. She’s got long, straight and black hair. Her face is round, her eyes are green. She’s got a small straight nose and thin lips. She is wearing white and black T-shirts and a black skirt.

1. 2. 3. - Look at this old woman. She is Mrs. Laura Brown and there are three pictures of girls here. One of these girls is Mrs. Laura when she was young. Listen to my description and guess which picture is hers.    Mrs. Brown was a very beautiful girl. She was short and slim. Her face was round. Her hair was blonde, long and curly. She had big brown eyes, a small nose and small red lips. She used to wear pretty dresses.

1. 2. 3. - Look at this old man. He is Mr. Peter Brown and there are three pictures of boys here. One of these boys is Mr. Peter Brown when he was young. Listen to my description and guess which picture is his.   When Mr. Brown was a boy he wasn’t handsome, but he was clever and kind. He was short and slim. His hair was short, straight and blonde. His face was oval. he had blue eyes, a small nose and big teeth. He wore spectacles.

Describing people Look at the screen again Now describe the character’s appearance yourselves. What does he/she look like?  

Feel the difference. What does he look like? Как он выглядит? Who does he look like? На кого он похож?

Who does he/she look like? Liza looks like her mother because she has… And her mother has… too. Gomer Madge Bard Liza Maggie The Simpsons - Who does he look like? – Who do you look like? Итог урока. - So, let’s draw a conclusion. I think now you can describe people’s appearance.
