THE POPULAR KINDS OF SPORTS IN THE USA

Sport in the USA is the main part of the national culture.

The most popular sport team games are: baseball and basketball

Also, American football and soccer are very popular.

Many Americans made USA country famous with their achievements in sport.

For example, a famous boxer Muhammad Ali, athlete Bob Beamon, cyclist Lance Armstrong and many others.

The government of the USA counted that the support of health cost cheaper than it’s restore.

Huge number of Americans try to give up from bad habits and pay much attention to sports.

Significant part of American society are sport fans.

People are not always go in for sports, but they are always cheer for their favourite team or athlete.

Many celebrities have their favourite teams. For example, on games of basketball team Los Angeles Lakers you can see a lot of famous fans:Jack Nicholson, Steven Spielberg, Denzel Washington.

Silvester Stallone is a fan of English football club “Everton”

US President Barack Obama is Pittsburgh Steelers’ and Chicago Bulls’ fan.

George Clooney and Charlie Sheen are Cincinnati Reds’ fans.

American Olympic team is traditionally one of the strongest teams on the Olympics.

Millions of Americans regularly watch Olympics on TV. Thousands come to stadiums to cheer for their compatriots.

BASEBALL Americans first began to play a game, which formed the basis of modern baseball on the beginning of 19-th century. Founder of modern baseball is Alexander Cartwright, who created rules for this game in 1845. Part of this rules are saved to our days.

Alexander Cartwright was born on 17.04.1820 in New York. He worked as fireman, bank cashier, later he owned a bookstore. When he was a fireman, he started to play game similar to baseball. At first, games were held on Manhattan, near Cartwright’s work, but then fans rented a field in New Jersey for 75 $ per year.

On 23rd of September, 1845 A. Cartwright founded a baseball club Knickerbockers, named after a fireman crew he worked in. First American baseball game was held on 19th of June, 1846, in Hoboken, New Jersey: the "New York Nine" defeated the Knickerbockers, 23–1, in four innings.

In 1857 National Association of Baseball players was founded.

Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players.  The aim is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching a series of four bases arranged at the corners of a 90-foot diamond. 

Players and trainers bust wear a special uniform : shirt, pants, baseball boots and a baseball cap. Catchers must wear helmets and special baseball glove.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL In 1823 one of the footballers of Rugby College in Britain instead of playing football with his feet took a ball in his hands and ran. That’s how new game called rugby was born.

Genuinely American football was born in 1867, that’s when rules were formed. In 1869 first game between college teams was played.

Step by step, rules changed and refined. In 1920, 11 football clubs united and American Football Association was created. In 1922, AFA recruited 7 clubs and became National Football League(NFL). Today football is not just one of the most popular and spectacle sports in American, but it’s also conquering rest of the world.

BASKETBALL Basketball is one of the most popular sports it the world. It all started in the end of the 19th century. In early December 1891 Dr. James Naismith,  a physical education professor in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, was trying to keep his gym class active on a rainy day.

For new game Dr. Naismith created few simple rules. At that time there were 9 players in a team, they played with a soccer ball, using fruit basket.

Basketball started to become popular. First game, after Naismith’s guidance was held in the end of 1891 and in the early 1892 competitions between college teams took place.

In 1898 first professional basketball league was formed. In the beginning of the 20th century metallic hoop and net were first used. In 1904 basketball was presented at Saint-Louis Olympics. At the Berlin Olympics in 1936 USA team won first Olympic gold in basketball.

In 1937 National Basketball League was created and after a merger with Basketball Association of America (BAA) was formed National Basketball Association or NBA.

SOCCER Game, that should be called football, in the USA called soccer. First soccer games took place in the end of the 19th century, between the USA and Canada teams.

Soccer started to be massive popular in America in 1970’s, when arrived famous footballers Pele and F. Beckenbauer.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is a professional soccer/football league. It consists of 15 teams. It was formed in 1996.

USA men’s soccer team by the September of 2009 was 11th in FIFA rating. A lot of team members play in the top European leagues.

The FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy is held since 1991. USA women’s team won it in 1991, 1999 and took 3rd place in 2003 and 2007.

People all over the world are fond of sport and games. Sports makes people healthy, keeps them fit, makes them more organized and disciplined.
