The world's first sandcastle hotel

The world's first sand castle hotel has recently opened at Weymouth beach in the seaside town of Dorset in the UK. The hotel was constructed from approximately 1000 tonnes of sand, built over 15 sq.m reaching a height of 4m.

For a mere 21USD a night guests can enjoy sleeping on a sand bed, bask in the summer sun and listen to the tide.

Capsule hotel

A capsule hotel is a type of hotel with a large number of extremely small "rooms" (capsules) intended to provide cheap and basic overnight accommodation for guests not requiring the services offered by more conventional hotels. Primarily concentrated in Japan, at least one capsule hotel has opened in 2009 in Warsaw, Poland, and another one, as of January 2011, in Shanghai, China, though as of February 23, Shanghai authorities declared the hotel violated safety standards and could not be opened.

The first floating hotel in Sweden

In October 2008, Sweden’s first floating hotel opened alongside the famous restaurant "Salt & Sill". The hotel is a meeting and conference venue with 46 beds, and is open all year round.

At the hotel, guests can work and socialise in an inspiring environment, enjoy good food and drink, and then fall asleep to the sound of lapping waves.

Despite the serene setting, there is plenty of opportunity for exciting and fun activities, with focus on the sea or food & drink.

The staff members are professional and service-minded and do their outmost to look after – not the customer – but the individual person.

Salt & Sill is a hotel and meeting place with a cosy, personal atmosphere, and a style characterised by modern Scandinavian simplicity.

The Prison Hotel: Alcatraz Hotel, Kaiserslauter

Open on May 2oo7, Alcatraz Hotel, built in a former prison from 1867 today offers a total of 57 rooms, with original carceral beds, lattice bars and pass-throughs in the heavy steel doors.

The hotel's manager, lawyer Andreas Kisch who together with a second lawyer bought the former prison, told Reuters Television in an interview that "we preserved a lot of the prison characteristics, as you can see here in the prison cell rooms."

Guests can sleep in convict uniform pyjamas complete with their embroidered name on it.
