Dniester Canyon - great and unexpected natural society that so sharply contrasts with relief of the Carpathians and Podolia, which both it separates from each other.
It is located between 4 regions: Ivano – Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi and Khmelnytskyi regions.
It’s total area is about 250 km. It makes the canyon one of the largest not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe.
The ancient name of the river is Danastr. The name comes from two old words «Дана" ("river") and «Істер" ("fast"). Thus, the Dniester - "fast river."
According to a local folk legend, the people, who lived behind the small spring, kept the calendar on the sandy ground. But once the spring poured and flooded it’s banks….When people came to it they didn’t find their days. The only question was “Who rubbed off the days?”
Frоm the vеrу first moment you агrive the Dnister Canyon you feel wrарреd up in а pleasant wave of tranquility and good spirits.
The Dnister’s banks give the idea of the cut surface. Outcrops are located here. Those are famous all over the world by its fauna and flora that are about 500 million years old. There is pratically no other such outcrops all over the world.
The Pride of the Park is travertine rocks - unique in its appeal relatively young geological formations with mysterious caves and grottoes.
You will be greatly surprised to see about 50 large and small caves. Among them is Optimistic Cave (230 km), one of the largest in the world.
You can enjoy the panoramic beauty of various flora here. On the slopes of the river preserved relic forest, highland and meadow-steppe fauna.
The fauna is interesting and diverse. But due to inaccessibility of slopes it is still poorly known.
